Finding housing for a fellowship: compare the whole offer
Content and linked guidance reviewed on 14 October 2026. Each city source retains its own data period and checked date.
Start the housing search with your placement address, exact dates and visitor status. A cheap student room can be irrelevant if visiting fellows cannot apply, while a more expensive room can reduce transport costs or avoid a second move. Compare offers that you can actually use.
Ask the host before searching widely
Request the staff or visiting-scholar housing contact, application rules and deadlines, and whether accommodation is guaranteed or only waitlisted. Ask whether the appointment letter is sufficient for eligibility and whether your partner or family can stay. Hospital accommodation, student residences and private rentals have different conditions; the word “fellow” does not settle them.
Your city guide links to practical housing starting points. A host page explains a process; a rental platform shows listings; a short-stay search helps bridge dates. None confirms that a specific room has been checked by Beyond the Stipend.
Make a like-for-like comparison
| Question | Why it changes the budget |
|---|---|
| What is the total for my exact dates? | Nightly, weekly and monthly prices can include different fees and minimum stays. |
| Which bills are included? | Heating, electricity, water, internet, laundry and cleaning can change the monthly comparison. |
| What must I pay before moving in? | Deposit, rent in advance and permitted fees affect arrival cash. |
| Can the dates change? | Check cancellation, early departure, extension and replacement-tenant terms. |
| Can I register this address? | Ask the host and the relevant authority whether the arrangement meets your administrative needs. |
| How do I reach my placement? | Check the actual campus and travel at your expected start and finish times. |
Keep monthly spending and deposit cash separate
Enter rent under housing. Put separately billed utilities and phone costs in their own category. If a bill is confirmed as included in rent, record that assumption and avoid charging it a second time. Use zero only for a confirmed included cost; an unanswered question should remain unanswered in the research record.
Record the deposit separately from permanent spending and keep its refund conditions. Temporary accommodation is an additional cost only for the nights not already covered by another rent payment. Leave room in your timeline for overlapping dates if you choose to inspect a long-stay property after arrival.
Verify who is receiving the payment
The US Federal Trade Commission’s rental-scam guidance ↗ recommends checking the address and the owner or management company independently. Copied listings can use genuine photographs with a different contact. Be wary of pressure to pay immediately or demands for gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire-transfer services. The guide is US consumer guidance; local tenancy procedures differ.
Use contact details you find independently on the host or management company's official website to confirm a referral. Ask for written terms covering the property, dates, payments and cancellation before committing. A platform logo, video tour or listing on this website is not proof that an offer is genuine.
A message you can send to the provider
I will be a visiting fellow at [host] from [date] to [date]. Am I eligible for this accommodation? Please confirm the full price for these dates, included bills, deposit, payment schedule, cancellation rules, address-registration eligibility and the process for verifying the contract and recipient.
For Geneva, start with UNIGE’s housing service ↗ and confirm your own visitor eligibility. For other destinations, use the host and official housing links in the relevant guide. Short-stay commercial searches can help compare alternatives, but availability and prices must be checked with the provider.
Next: work out your arrival cash or plan a Geneva fellowship.
